The Student Legislative Seminar is a nonpartisan program designed to provide New Brunswick senior high school students with a better understanding of the functions and operations of government in their province.

This weekend program is held annually in the Legislative Assembly Building in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

Content of the Seminar

The Seminar has two components: a Business Program and a Social Program.

The Business Program consists of topics presented by guest speakers, and various workshops. Subjects discussed focus on the judicial, executive and legislative branches of government. Students participate in a Mock Parliament at the conclusion of the program. Simultaneous translation is provided for most sessions.

The Social Program provides students with a possible opportunity to visit the Lieutenant-Governor's Home, to meet the Lieutenant-Governor, to interact with students from other parts of the province and to visit areas of interest in the city of Fredericton.

Objectives

The objectives of the seminar are:
  1. 1. to provide a comprehensive understanding of the functions and operations of the government in New Brunswick
  2. 2. to encourage the use of the model parliament forum in New Brunswick senior high schools
  3. 3. to promote positive relations between Anglophone and Francophone students in New Brunswick
  4. 4. to develop informed and responsible Canadian citizens
